A film, also called a movie or motion picture, is a story conveyed with moving images. It is produced by recording photographic images with cameras, or by creating images using animation techniques or visual effects. The process of filmmaking has developed into an art form and industry.

Films are cultural artifacts created by specific cultures, which reflect those cultures, and, in turn, affect them. Film is considered to be an important art form, a source of popular entertainment and a powerful method for educating — or indoctrinating — citizens. The visual elements of cinema give motion pictures a universal power of communication. Some films have become popular worldwide attractions by using dubbing or subtitles that translate the dialogue.

Films are made up of a series of individual images called frames. When these images are shown rapidly in succession, a viewer has the illusion that motion is occurring. The viewer cannot see the flickering between frames due to an effect known as persistence of vision, whereby the eye retains a visual image for a fraction of a second after the source has been removed. Viewers perceive motion due to a psychological effect called beta movement.

The origin of the name "film" comes from the fact that photographic film (also called film stock) has historically been the primary medium for recording and displaying motion pictures. Many other terms exist for an individual motion picture, including picture, picture show, moving picture, photo-play and flick. A common name for film in the United States is movie, while in Europe the term cinema is preferred. Additional terms for the field in general include the big screen, the silver screen, the cinema and the movies.

What is a good camcorder to be filming short action films with?
Q. I'm starting to love to make short action films, but the camera right now I have has very bad quality and it's just... not good for any kind of short films at all. Please recommend a good quality HD camera for me? I can only go into the budget of up to 500-600 dollars. Also in my short films I tend to not use a tripod in shots for more dramatic shaky effect and the camera I have right now freaks out a little bit too much without a tripod.

What's the difference between films in terms of "120" or "35mm"?
Q. I see all these different film cameras around with different types of film that they can process. So what's the difference between all of these types of film? Is 120 better quality that 35mm? and is 110 just slightly lower quality? or does the number have nothing to do with the quality of the film? basically, i just want to know the difference between those films. thanks

A. It is both size and quality. These are three different size films. 110 is the smallest, then 35mm and then 120. The larger the film the better the quality of the photograph though not the film. Larger film simply has more info to work with so you get a better more finely detailed print. 110 film will be relatively hard to find though it is still made. It is very small and is associated with small point and shoot cameras like a Kodak instamatic. It measures 13x17mm 35mm film is the most widely available and is used in both point and shoot and SLR cameras. It measure 24mmx36mm. 120 film is the largest and is used in medium format camera like Hasselblad and Mamiya. This is a roll film and can be used in various aspect ratios. It is 72cm… [cont.]

How can you find auditions for mainstream feature length films?
Q. I'm trying to find auditions for fim acting and I'm just found a lot of casting calls for short student films and commercials and the like. How can you find more mainstream film studio auditions?

A. If by "mainstream" you mean "studio" feature films, you're going to have to have a combination of things going on for you. 1. You need to be in a major market (Los Angeles, New York, Vancouver, Toronto, London). That's where the feature films are cast, even if they shoot elsewhere. 2. You need to have an agent pitching you to get meetings with the top casting directors, who cast those big films. We (casting directors) have far too many submissions coming at us to do our job without an agent or manager helping us filter out the most talented folks we need to see (vs. those who are just hoping to be famous). 3. Until you have an agent, and until you're in a major market, you need to build up your own credits in indie films, student films,… [cont.]
