Was Harry Houdini ever an american citizen?
Q. I have to do a project about a not that well known American citizen who impacted in any way. My first choice is Harry Houdini, but I want to know if he ever became an American citizen, since he was born in Hungary. Also, if you know of anyone I can do for my project that fits the criteria stated above as a backup plan in case anyone does Houdini too. Thank you for any help.

A. Yes. He was born in 1874 in Hungary his family emigrated to America in 1878 his father gained US citizenship in 1882 this made Houdini an American citizen. Jennie Jerome, who married Lord Randolph Churchill and was the mother of Winston Churchill, could be your back up. She was the daughter of an American millionaire.

Gordon Whitehead, who delivered multiple blows to Houdini's abdomen (with permission) while he was in Montreal. These repetitive blows are thought to have been a stunt, in which Houdini displayed his dexterity. The eyewitnesses were students named Jacques Price and Sam Smilovitz (sometimes called Jack Price and Sam Smiley). Their accounts generally agreed. The following is Price's description of events: Houdini was reclining on his couch after his performance, having an art student sketch him. When Whitehead came in and asked if it was true that Houdini could take any blow to… [cont.]

  • Disloyalty in trusted servants is one of the most disheartening things that can happen to a public performer. But it must not be thought that I say this out of personal experience: for in the many years that I have been before the public my secret methods have been steadily shielded by the strict integrity of my assistants, most of whom have been with me for years. Only one man ever betrayed my confidence, and that only in a minor matter. But then, so far as I know, I am the only performer who ever pledged his assistant to secrecy, honor and allegiance under a notarial oath.
